Jude Elliot has sent in the following information about the Samuel Shutler family.    Samuel emigrated to New Zealand.  Thank you Jude!

Samuel SHUTLER, son of Samuel SHUTLER and Thomasine NORTON, was born 3 April 1845 in Merriott.  He emigrated to New Zealand sometime after the 1871 census, and married Harriet Gilpin on August 9, 1877, in Wellington.  He died on December 23, 1894 in Wellington, and was buried in the Karori Cemetery.
Harriet was born in 1859, and died  January 18, 1932, in Wellington. She is also buried at the Karori Cemetery.

Samuel’s occupation was given in 1894 as a painter.   In 1893 Harriet signed the Women’s Suffrage petition, and her address was listed as 28 Elizabeth St, Wellington.

Samuel & Harriet’s children were:

1. Maud Mary SHUTLER,
born February 25, 1878, died August 9, 1946.   She married Harold William THOMAS on 22 January 1907 in Wellington.  They had three children: Kenneth Newport Thomas (1911); Milton Baker Thomas (1913) and Frank Evan Thomas (after 1914).

2. Samuel SHUTLER, born August 15, 1879, died October 22, 1943.  He married Rachel Winifred FITCH on September 1st, 1919.   Samuel’s occupation was Railway Shunter.  He is buried in Karori Cemetery, described as 1914-18 63950 L/Cpl S Shutler, Auckland Regt.  They had two children:  Olive Shutler (1920) married Gordon DREW and had six children;   and Frank Samuel Shutler (1922).    Frank is buried in the War Graves in Cassino Cemetery, Italy, noted as aged 22, died March 15, 1944.  He was a private in the NZ Infantry.  

3.  Olive Myrtle SHUTLER, born May 28, 1890 in Wellington, and died December 1, 1940 in Wellington.   She married William Henry SHORT in 1919.  They had
one child:   Keith Arthur Short (1920).
