The Hutchings Family of Merriott

The Somerset Record Office holds the following piece:
Q/SR/99/47:  Examination.    Evidence given by Ann Brooke of Meriett, spinster, that six years ago there was an agreement of marriage between herself and William Hutchins of Meriett,  that William Hutchins had carnal knowledge of the examinant’s body in her own house, that she was begotten with a female child who is now 5 years of age,  and that William Hutchins is the father.  It is also stated that the examinant did not present against William Hutchins until now because he left the country and returned only half a year ago.  JP: George Speke.  Date:  6 March 1661.
[Note:  there are two births listed in the Church of England registers for Merriott:   Grace?  born 17 Mar 1653, a Base Child of Ann Brooke; and Susana born  26 April 1656, a Bastard Child.   Neither children are listed as having been baptised.]

The Hutchings/Hutchins surname was first mentioned in the Merriott Parish Registers in 1654, with two marriages:

Marriage 28 December 1654 Joane Hutchins Daughter of Thomas Hutchins, of Merriott married John Hooper.
Marriage 29 June 1654 Margaret Hutchins Daughter of Thomas Hutchins of Merriott married John Brooke.

Then comes three burials:

This part of the register is very difficult to read with some obvious damage to the paper.  Several years appear to be missing.  The entries don’t start again for the surname until the 1730s:
