MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTION FROM ALL SAINTS CHURCHYARD

Courtesy of Lesley Murray, a descendant of Mary Cridge & Joseph Lawrence.

Joseph was son of Susanna Lawrence and Joseph Eason, and he & his wife Mary nee Cridge moved to Sherborne and were known as Joseph & Mary Eason.    Later Joseph remarried, and gave his father’s name as Joseph Eason.  This Joseph Eason died in 1797, but his son Joseph (Lawrence) Eason was left some money in William Eason’s will in 1820.   William was father of Joseph Eason and grandfather of  Joseph (Lawrence) Eason.

In loving memory of

William Cridge
Who died at Lopen April 23 1893
Aged 78 years

My family left Merriott and went to Sherborne, where they stopped using the Lawrence name and became Joseph and Mary Eason. Later Joseph married again and gave his fathers name as Joseph Eason. Joseph Eason died in 1796 but was obviously known to be the father of Susannah’s child. Susannah then married Peter Pattemore in 1802.
In William Eason’s will in 1820 he left money to Joseph Eason, son of Susannah Pattemore.
Joseph and Mary had several children, some remained Eason but my ancestor, Sampson used the name Easton.
 Regards, Lesley

Emigration to the United States – Matthew CRIDGE & Family

This information comes from Al Cridge, January 2004: Thank you Al! (acridge@hotmail.com )

My name is Al Cridge and I live in Gibsonia Pennsylvania USA . I am interested in the CRIDGE, ENGLAND,and related families; specifically the SPROUTING and CHURCHILL line. John Cridge and Mary England, (married 17 June 1817), were my 3x great-grand parents and their son Matthew was my 2x great-grandfather.  Matthew came to the United States when he was about 19 years of age with his mother and some of his younger siblings. I do not know about his father, but information in an old family bible states that he died on 4 May1850, of paralysis. Matthew Cridge practiced his trade of pattern maker, and eventually became a partner in the firm of Wadsworth and Cridge Engine Builders, manufacturers of steam engines in Allegheny City , which is now Pittsburgh’s North Side. He was the holder of quite a few patents for steam engine designs, steam valves, and speed governors from which he amassed substantial wealth.
Joseph Cridge worked as a butcher in Allegheny City and died around 1890.
Mary (England) Cridge died on 4 November 1876, at the age of 83, and is buried in Uniondale Cemetery on Pittsburgh’s North Side.
Robert Cridge died 3 September 1867 and is buried in the family plot near his mother.
Matthew Cridge died in March of 1908, at almost 85 years of age.
