The Raindle/Raindall/Rendall/Rendle Family of Merriott

This family is somewhat difficult to track through the Merriott records because of the variations in the way the name was spelled. There arose the situation of, for example, children growing up & spelling their surname in a different way to their parents, once they themselves were having children baptised. As a result, I am including all forms of the name on this page. The variations in the early records may be nothing more than the personal interpretation of the spelling of the name by whomever was doing the recording.

Towards the middle of the 18th century, the surname was being spelt with an “e” rather than an “ai”: Rendle/Rendal/Rendall/Rendel/Rendell. Later the “ai” spelling reappeared.

During the time of the censuses, the surnames RENDALL & RAINDLE & variations were the 13th most common surname in Merriott. There does seem to be an injection of at least one line of “new” blood into Merriott with the marriage of the Yeoman William Rendall, of Hinton St George to Mary Templeman in 1804.
