Earliest Mention in the Records
The first mention of the surname PAUL in the Merriott Parish Registers was on 23 June 1664 with the marriage of Elizabeth Paul to Peter Stembridge. There are only three mentions of the surname STEMBRIDGE in these records: firstly the marriage mentioned above, secondly a marriage of a Robert STEMBRIDGE of Merriott to a Mary MARKES in 1655, and thirdly the burial of the widow Joane STEMBRIDGE in 1670. As the name STEMBRIDGE does not appear in Merriott again, presumably Elizabeth Paul & her husband moved elsewhere, as did Robert & Mary Stembridge.
