Jude Elliot’s Interests – Norton etc
NORTON Simon (aka Simeon in some records) NORTON, born 1839 in Merriott, son of Robert NORTON and Mary BROOKS, migrated to New South Wales, Australia on the “Fitzjames” in 1858. He claimed to have relatives there – William NORMAN – also of Merriott. Other members of Robert NORTON’S family also went to Australia at the same time. Simon’s brother, Abel, with his wife Christiana EASON, also of Merriott, returned to Somerset in 1865. Simon went on to the goldfields in New Zealand and spent about 8 years there before settling in Temuka, South Canterbury, New Zealand in 1866. He married Mary WOODFINE, of Finsbury, Middlesex in 1869 and they went on to have a large family. Other descendants of Robert NORTON went to Canada, and Jersey, Channel Islands .
