Merriott Censuses
All fiche for the censuses of Merriott, with the exception of the 1881, are available from the Public Record Office ( http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/) for purchase if desired. The Public Record Office site also leads to access to the 1901 census in a user-pays, searchable database. Census records are Crown copyright. According to their own information:
“Users are free to copy, index, transcribe, publish and broadcast such Crown copyright material without formal permission, payment of a copyright fee or acknowledgment of copyright. The appropriate record office’s custody of the original document must nevertheless still be acknowledged, and the archival document reference given. “
I have transcribed all the Merriott portion of these censuses with the exception of the 1881, which is already wonderfully covered by the LDS (Latter Day Saints) project. Several Merriott censuses can be found on the Somerset GENUKI site: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/SOM/Merriott/index.htm
Generally a few other nearby villages are also included on the same fiche, which I haven’t transcribed, although I have extracted entries where someone in the household is noted as being “born Merriott”.
The following table shows the censuses as they pertain to Merriott, showing the archival document reference on each census’s first line.
