Parish Briefs

Notes in the Merriott Parish Registers 1723-1730 (Broken periods)

Does anyone know anything about these types of collections – was the practise widespread through England, and for what period of time?

I’ve had a reply from Michael Dwyer, who sent the following information to me:

“I have a History of Holt, Norfolk, (1908) which states that most of the town of Holt-market, Norfolk was destroyed by fire in 1708. The book states, “A royal brief was issued at once for collections throughout the country in aid of the homeless townsfolk of Holt.” Apparently it meant a call for some sort of charitable fundraiser.”
