Parish Briefs
Notes in the Merriott Parish Registers 1723-1730 (Broken periods)
Does anyone know anything about these types of collections – was the practise widespread through England, and for what period of time?
I’ve had a reply from Michael Dwyer, who sent the following information to me:
“I have a History of Holt, Norfolk, (1908) which states that most of the town of Holt-market, Norfolk was destroyed by fire in 1708. The book states, A royal brief was issued at once for collections throughout the country in aid of the homeless townsfolk of Holt. Apparently it meant a call for some sort of charitable fundraiser.”
