Sometime between the 1851 Census of Merriott and 1856, James Sweet and his wife Mary Trask and their children moved from Merriott to Martock in Somerset.   James was a shepherd.   Of their children, their son William, who married Elizabeth Ring in 1876, moved with his family, including daughter Louisa Ellen May Sweet,  to Guernsey around 1880. William & Elizabeth had already had two other children in Martock, who had died in infancy. The couple went on to have a further 10 children on Guernsey.  John believes that William, who was a shepherd like his father, moved to Guernsey to work for a master butcher by the name of Best.

Of William & Elizabeth’s children, Hilda Maude Sweet left Guernsey and emigrated to Canada.     Henry Charles Sweet born 9 February 1899 and Nellie Gertrude Sweet both stayed on Guernsey, although both had children who emigrated to Australia.   Sydney Sweet died on board a ship in harbour in Australia aged 18 years.
