Queen of the Colonies
Voyages to Queensland : 1863

The following information is from a Brisbane Courier Mail article of 16th December 1933, entitled “Alabama Chases Famous Ships”, by A. G. Davies.

Originally, the Queen of the Colonies was called the Wizardand under that name did good service for 10 or 11 years as a Californian Clipper. During the American Civil War, the Confederate Cruiser Alabama wrought much havoc among American shipping.   The Wizard was bound for a British port in 1862 when the Alabama came in sight, and she just managed to escape capture by slipping into the Thames.    She was then bought by TM Mackay and Company, the London managers of the Black Ball Line, and named Queen of the Colonies as a compliment to Queensland. She took a number of immigrants on board, destined for Moreton Bay (Queensland), and left to pick up additional passengers in Queenstown (Cork) Ireland on 13th December 1862.  Here is one passenger’s description of what followed:

“The air was full of snow and the cold very severe.  On the run down channel and across to the Irish coast a succession of gales was met with, in consequence of which the crew were kept constantly at work, having few opportunities for sleep.  One morning it was observed that a steamer – there were not many of them in those days – with a long line of smoke streaming
from her single funnel, was heading for our ship, a manoeuvre which caused no little surprise to the people crowding excitedly on the deck.

“The stranger ran up to within a quarter of a mile of us, and fired a gun across our bows, which naturally occasioned further surprise, and from the poop to the cuddy, the cry went up, ‘The Alabama!!’  Our skipper, Captain Cairncross, steadfastly refused to heave to, and kept on his course, apparently ignoring the other ship….

“A second gun was fired from the Alabama which came to within a hundred yards of the Queen of the Colonies, before Captain Semmes of the Alabama called out to Captain Cairncross, who identified the ship as the Queen of the Colonies, from London to Brisbane with two hundred and fifty souls aboard. Up went the Union Jack, and at that point the Alabama captain was satisfied and steamed away.”

So the first voyage began with incident, as indeed it was to end.

My husband’s O’BRIEN ancestors were passengers on this first voyage, sponsored by the Queensland Emigration Society, which was a Catholic organization set up by the first Catholic Bishop of Queensland, James Quinn, with the  intention of bringing out more good Irish Catholics to build up the Catholic population of Queensland. Although the QES only lasted a few years, many thousands of Catholics were able to emigrate to Queensland in this way.

92 passengers embarked at London, and the remainder, including 26 stowaways, at Queenstown.    Measles appeared soon after sailing from Queenstown; 35 cases – 6 fatal (in infants only).  Two adults died in childbirth, one infant from convulsions, and one adult from injuries received in a fall.   There were seven births, five of which were females.   [Note:  three of the births were O’BRIENs].

One of the passengers, Henry John Ford, kept a diary of his passage from England to Australia.  The first entry is dated 23rd December 1862, and there is no mention of the encounter with the Alabama described above. Nor is it mentioned in the newspaper reports in the Brisbane Courier. Ford does naturally mention the drama outlined below, as he was one of the volunteers involved.

During the voyage the ship made good time.  She anchored off Moreton Island on 6th April, and on 7th April at 5 pm, 13 crew and volunteer passengers took the life-boat to the island to bury one of the passengers, Mrs Barnfield, who had died in childbirth. In the boat were Mr Barnfield, Captain Hill, and Messrs Durrant, Arundel, Langford, Ford, Eldridge (chief officer), Grant (fourth-mate), Roach and Murray (quarter-masters), and three able seamen.  At 7 pm the boat returned and had reached the ship but a violent squall erupted and the crew were unable to reach the rope thrown for them.  The life-boat then disappeared.   Captain Cairncross decided to continue to Brisbane on the 8th of April, whereafter search crews were sent to look for the life-boat.

The men attempted to row to Brisbane but the boat overturned on a sandbank, and Mr Barnfield was drowned.  They returned to a beach near where Caloundra is today.  Three of the men (Eldridge, Grant & Durant) then tried to reach settlement overland and were the last to be found – on April 26th.  The remainder had already been found at Caloundra.   All were in terrible condition – sunburnt and starving, and nearly naked, having lost clothing when the boat overturned.   A street in Caloundra is named after the ship – Queen of the Colonies Parade – and for many years a Pandanus tree stood at Moffatt Head,  which bore the inscription “Queen of the Colonies” and several of the castaways initials engraved on it. (The Queen of the Colonies Tree).   The remains of the tree are now held by the Royal Historical Society of Queensland, in their Queen of the Colonies display.

Some information on the Queen of the Colonies Tree can be found at:

Have a look at the information on the Queensland Water Police Site:   http://www.qldwaterpolice.com/history.html

Here are a few photographs taken in the Queen of the Colonies Parade at Moffat Beach on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast:

The inscription reads:

“Queen of the Colonies”
On the 8th April 1863 the ship “Queen of the Colonies” sailed into Moreton Bay.  A woman passenger had died and it was decided to take the body to Cape Moreton for burial.   While returning, a storm arose, the ship was lost to sight, and the small boat was driven to the rocks below this spot.  The survivors were marooned for fourteen days, living on shell-fish and berries, until rescued by a search party from Brisbane.    One of the sailors carved the name “Queen of the Colonies” on the pandanus tree.   This led to their rescue

This plaque was presented by the descendants of Capt. Robert Cairncross.

The passenger list for the 1863 voyage of the Queen of the Colonies was lost at the Queensland State Archives for many years, and it missed being filmed by the LDS Church at the time when most other passenger lists were filmed.  It also missed inclusion in the “Index to Assisted Immigrants to Queensland” compiled by the Central Queensland Family History Association.   Once it was found, however, it was copied and is presented at State Archives in a large hard cover book format.  Unfortunately the list was originally written on both sides of the paper and the reverse shows through quite substantially, making reading of the list quite difficult.  I have added the Land Order Number and whether QES (in this list written as Qld Imm Society) sponsored. The passenger number relates to the original order of the list, which was not alphabetical.
