Queen of the Colonies
Voyages to Queensland : 1865

From the Brisbane Courier, Tuesday 10 October 1865:

“Sailed from Gravesend, England on 9 July 1865, and took her final departure from the Lizard Point [Cornwall] on the 15th.   Thence the run to the equator was made in 24 days, she having experienced fine weather and variable winds.   The Line was crossed in long. 28 deg W on August 18th.  After that the passage to the meridian of the Cape of Good Hope was much lengthened by light and …. winds, and hardly any south-east trades were experienced.  The Cape was passed on September 16, and the casting was run down on the 18th parallel, the ship meeting generally with fine weather and steady breezes.  The Queen of the Colonies passed to the southward of Tasmania, and arrived at Cape Moreton on Friday, October 6, at 3.30 pm, thus accomplishing the passage within eighty-three days, computed from the Lizard.

“The Queen of the Colonies had on board when she arrived 552 souls, comprising 28 saloon, 20 second cabin, 6 intermediate and 438 Steerage.  They were under the medical supervision of Dr Underhay.  Generally speaking the passengers enjoyed good health, and the only diseases were those usually incidental to a sea voyage.   There were seven deaths of young children, and several of these were in a sickly condition when brought on board.

“The Queen of the Colonies brings a cargo of general merchandise and railway iron, amounting in all to about 1300 tons.

“During the passage, Captain [Henry] Jones appears to have gained the goodwill of the passengers, as shown by the appended testimonial which has been presented to him.   Unfortunately we cannot say the same of Dr Underhay, for, by the address referred to, he seems to have made himself very obnoxious to the majority of the passengers.   Happily such complaints are not often made with regard to the surgeon-superintendents of the ships bringing passengers to Queensland.”

[Dr Underhay disputed this ‘calumny’ and the Executive Council censured the Captain and officers and subordinate officers in a letter to the editor of the Brisbane Courier Tuesday 14 November 1865.    Letters to the editor protesting the situation were contained in the 15 November and 16 November editions of the Brisbane Courier.  Further letters were contained in the Brisbane Courier of 17th and 20th November.  All seemed to be on the Captain’s side!]
