2. Will of Edward Pattemore

[Courtesy of John Prince & Trevor Hutchings]

The Will of Edward Pattemore runs to five pages of a fair amount of legal jargon, but also is fairly detailed in describing Edward’s possessions, including his properties. The Will is dated the 10th of August, 1876.     Edward died on the 6th of April, 1877. He mentions his second wife, Ann, and his children and grandchildren by name,
including:

1.    Son, Thomas
2.    Daughter, Thirza Sweet, and her son Henry Pattemore
3.    Son Oliver – noted as “now residing in Australia”
4.    Son Abel –  also noted as “now residing in Australia”
5.    Grandson Francis Pattemore – son of Edward’s late son Simon.
6.    Four grandchildren (not mentioned by name), children of his deceased daughter Dorcas Harrison

The first bequest was to his son Thomas – “my Apple Mill, Cider Press, three two hogshead casks, two one hogshead casks, Kitchen settle, two kitchen tables, bed and pole bedstead and large oak chest”. Thomas was already in Queensland, Australia, after emigrating in 1857;   whether he ever collected his inheritance is not known. The bequests seem strange for a son on the other side of the world.    He also does not mention the fact that Thomas is residing in Australia, unlike the mentions for other sons Oliver & Abel.

Basically most of Edward’s estate went to his wife Ann, including rents from properties at Higher Street & Townsend occupied by Joseph Shutler and Matthew Pattemore; cottages in Higher Street occupied by Henry Farr & William Bailey and two cottages in Higher Street in the occupation of Hannah Sweet & William Wills Lawrence, although the latter rents were to go to Ann only for a period of two years after which Dorcas Harrison’s children were the beneficiaries. The rent from the cottages occupied  by Benjamin Sweet and William Pattemore were to go to Edward’s daughter Thirza (actually married to Benjamin Sweet).

Edward’s second wife, Ann, lived for 29 years after his death, and quite possibly made a will of her own sometime during this period.  The bequest to son Oliver of the sum of Fifty Pounds payable in five equal yearly instalments commencing a year after the death of  his stepmother Ann was no doubt never paid, as Oliver predeceased her by 22 years.   It is also doubtful whether grandson Francis appreciated his bequest of two shillings a week for two years, commencing a year after the death of his step-grandmother, by which time Francis was 43 years old.    That’s if he ever received it.

It would be interesting to find out whether Ann made a will and distributed the property differently, or whether she was happy for Edward to administer the estate from the grave for 29 years.

The executors of the will were named as Robert Warry – of the Rectory Farm, Merriott, Yeoman  and Sampson Trask of Merriott, Publican.  In the wording towards the end of the document Robert Warry is identified as actually Robert Rousell.  This person was in fact Robert Rousell Warry, born 12 February 1838 in Merriott, son of Richard Warry and Hannah Rousell; never married; buried 12 January 1920 aged 81 years, of the Rectory Farm, Merriott.  Sampson Trask was baptised in 1831 in Merriott, married to Jane, five children, and died in 1891, residence the Bell Inn, Merriott.
